Math is often treated as a siloed subject, despite its connection to everything. People have had bad experiences with math. Changing how we approach it and what we can link it to can very well change the attitude surrounding it. The link between quantitative literacy and traditional literacy is pivotal and is not discussed nearly enough.
Mathematics is a language. It's about communication, information, systems, networks. It’s about representation, understanding, ideas, and so much more. Math is everywhere, whether we realize it or not.
We discuss the universe using mathematics. Quantitative Literacy is crucial in that. It permeates everything as a result. Traditional Literacy is also important. Knowing how to read, how to write, and how to communicate impacts our everyday lives.
Not having quantitative literacy, or not having it in a strong capacity, impacts how people interact with mathematics and the world. Changing the conversation surrounding mathematics is the key to fixing that problem. Connecting it to what we know is key. The link between literacy and logic is key. They are two sides of the same coin and it is time we explore that.
